West Middlesex Tennis Club
Sunday 27th October saw the finals of the 2103 West Middlesex Tennis Club closed tournament.
It was a fantastic day of tennis with 5 closely fought finals and a semi-final played, in difficult conditions. We were lucky that the sun came out and there was no rain, but there was a challenging gale force wind to contend with!
First to take the court was the men’s doubles final between Matt Brown & John Stevens against the youngsters Chris Jones & Toby Kang Pettinger – it was a well fought battle but in the end Matt’s speed at the net and John’s huge reach got the better of Chris & Toby winning 7-5, 6-4. Alongside the men on court 4 was the ladies doubles finals, 4 of the club’s 1st team players Alice Currie & Charlotte Bantleman v Ruki Daruwalla & Clare Hewitt battled it out – it was a really close match but Alice & Charlotte finally triumphed 7-6, 7-5.
Soon after this match Clare and Ruki were back on court again, but this time opposite each other in the ladies singles final. Another hard fought match that went to a tie break in the third set, with Clare eventually winning 1-6, 6-4, 7-6. At the same time as the ladies singles finals on court 3 the elite men battled out the men’s singles final. This was between recently joined member Christopher Coello and Mario Wrobel. There was some stunning tennis played, another 3 set match decided by a tie break, that ended in victory for Christopher 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
The men’s doubles winners found themselves playing each other in the mixed doubles final. Matt paired with Bridget Gregory and John with Sarah Powell, another exciting match to watch with Matt and Bridget finishing victors 6-4, 6-3. A good crowd braved the cold, blustery conditions to come and support their fellow members and enjoyed a barbeque and refreshments.
